StormImpact Provides Power Companies with Tools to Tackle Storm-Related Repairs

A tree-lined city street with buildings and street signs submerged in muddy water with ducks swimming.

In 2022, Steven Quiring, professor in the Department of Geography at The Ohio State University, co-founded a startup, StormImpact, along with Byrd Center Senior Researcher Brent McRoberts and former astronomy graduate student Scott Hull.

The company combines weather science, data analysis, and machine learning to assist power companies in effectively managing power outages, disturbances, and storm-related repairs. Quiring acknowledged the role of the Office of Innovation and Economic Deveopment's (OIED's) Technology Commercialization Office in the company's success, emphasizing the support from research staff and collaborative efforts that led to the creation of a valuable product.

The startup's goal is to expand its services to benefit a wider range of utilities and industries. Visit OIED to learn more about StormImpact.
