The State Climate Office of Ohio (SCOO) is thrilled to announce that our Assistant State Climatologist, Jim DeGrand, has been honored with Byrd Center's prestigious Henry Brecher Technical Achievement Award. This award is a testament to Jim's exceptional contributions to enhancing Ohio's premier weather monitoring network, the Ohio Mesonet.

Jim joined SCOO after retiring from a distinguished 32-year career at The Ohio State University's Department of Geography. His most recent efforts have been transitioning the legacy Ag Weather Network into the modernized Ohio Mesonet, designing and installing the next generation of weather stations across Ohio, replacing outdated systems, and significantly advancing the state's weather monitoring and forecasting capabilities.

Jim's expertise in meteorological instrumentation and his unique approach have enabled Mesonet to provide reliable, real-time weather data essential for agricultural, educational, and commercial applications.

One of Jim's most notable innovations has been the introduction of the first precipitation-weighing rain gauge in the network. This tool has drastically improved the accuracy of precipitation measurements, which are crucial for water resource management and agricultural planning. Additionally, Jim has spearheaded the adoption of new data loggers and electrical enclosures that enhance the network's performance and reliability.

Another innovation was developing a homemade winching system for safer and more efficient maintenance practices. This system enables personnel to maintain the Mesonet's 10-meter instrument towers without requiring manual lifts or hazardous climbs. The winching system's collapsible design ensures it is easily transportable and deployable across various station locations, improving operational safety and efficiency.

Jason Cervenec, the Education and Engagement Director at Byrd Center, and Geddy Davis, the Climate Services Coordinator, nominated Jim.

Jim's dedication has provided Ohioans with the most accurate and actionable weather information possible. Congratulations, Jim, on this well-earned honor!
